When temperatures start dropping around Bozeman we start planning our annual sock drive! This year was our third annual sock drive and was bigger and better than ever! We had donation locations spread all around town from Bozeman, to Four Corners, and Belgrade. In addition, we also co-hosted an event at the Rocking R Bar. This drive and event brought in a record number of socks!
WHAT DOES HRDC DO WITH / NEED SOCKS FOR?
“Men’s and women’s warm socks generally head straight over to our Warming Center. Each evening at the Warming Center guests are given the option of trading their old socks in for a new pair. The old socks, if still in good condition, are cleaned and used for another individual in the future. Clean socks help keep feet healthy, eliminate unpleasant smells and just feel good!
A few socks may stay at the main HRDC office and be kept in a cabinet for our Service Navigators or Housing Staff to use when a customer comes in at any time during the year in need of clothing. Socks are a very common request and being able to just get up and grab a pair feels great for everyone.
Socks that are not necessarily intended for cold months or more dress or sporty make their way to the annual Back to School Shopping event held the first Wednesday of school. This year over 300 girls and boys attended, shopped and left very grateful. We gather new and used clothing, personal care items, coats, shoes, etc. and set up a room at the Fairgrounds to look like a Thrift Store where everyone shops for free. We always have a sock table (limit 2 per person) and it is very popular.
Socks that are for younger children will make their way to the staff in our Early Childhood programs. Classroom teachers need socks on hand little ones who may need them.
